What constitutes a good role model for young women?

Beyonce used to represent an empowered, independent woman and has recently been transforming her identity into ‘Mrs. Carter’, ‘the girl you like’. Is overt sexuality the only way that women can demonstrate ‘empowerment’ or are young pop stars, like Miley Cyrus, just puppets being manipulated for others’ profits? How does the hyper-sexualisation of women in the media feed low self-esteem and distorted body image, with a rise in patients being admitted to hospitals for eating disorders?

What characteristics constitute a positive female role model for young people and who would you prefer they look up to as a model of success?

Following International Women’s day, we’re continuing with a debate started around our “watercooler”. Join us in this discussion of women’s rights and how young people are influenced by the images portrayed in the media and popular culture.
