The third event in our Food Talks series – brought to you by Impact Hub Kings Cross in partnership with the Food Ethics Council, Organico and Think.Eat.Drink – is entitled “What problems are GM food and feed trying to solve?”. It features leading speakers, Dr Michael Anthoniou (Reader in Molecular Genetics, King’s College, London) and Hilary Sutcliffe (Director of MATTER). The discussion will be chaired by Dan Crossley, Executive Director of the Food Ethics Council.

The subject of GM food and feed is immediately polarising for many. A suite of GM technologies are often bundled together and labelled as ‘not the answer’ to our long-term food security challenges. On the other side, those involved claim it is a necessary part of the solution to ‘feeding the world’ (given our growing population and increasing pressure on resources). Much of the concern about GM food and feed is linked to a very real concern about monopoly patent controls of the global food supply chain, locking in poor farms with what some may see as undemocratic corporates. But how can we unpick the issues? What problems are GM food and feed trying to solve? What aspects of the technology might be beneficial (if any)? How can we create an enabling environment that supports innovation for good (whether or not that includes GM)?

Our two expert speakers will present, followed by a Q&A session, then a delicious and free buffet supplied by co-sponsors Organico and T.E.D. The idea of our Food Talks series is to stimulate debate and constructive thinking about the issues that surround the world of food.

The final Food Talks of 2015 is planned for December 10th. Please join us.
